The JAC JS2 is a B-segment SUV under JAC Motors, positioned as an entry-level urban commuter targeted at younger buyers. Marketed domestically in China as the "Refine S2", the model is badged as the JS2 in export markets. Styled by the JAC Turin Design Centre in Italy, the Refine S2 officially debuted on 31 August 2015 across five variants, with official indicative pricing ranging between RM59,800 and RM76,800. On 20 September 2016, a facelifted Refine S2 was launched, adopting JAC's revised brand emblem alongside refreshed exterior styling details. The 2018 model year introduced further trim lines such as the Smart Drive Edition and Track Edition, offering 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre powertrain options.
While the model has since been discontinued in China, the JS2 moniker remains active across international markets, having been introduced in Costa Rica, Chile, Egypt, the Philippines, and Russia. In April 2025, JAC introduced the JS2 PRO in Chile, targeting younger drivers with sleek styling, connected tech, and nimble handling. For the Egyptian market, the 2026 JS2 is priced at approximately EGP 739,900, positioning it as one of the most competitive models in its class, while Egypt's Kasrawy Group has initiated local CKD (completely knocked-down) assembly operations for the crossover.
Dimension-wise, the JS2 measures 4,135 mm long, 1,750 mm wide, and 1,568 mm tall, with a 2,490 mm wheelbase. It is equipped with a 42-litre fuel tank and offers a standard boot capacity of 450 litres, which expands further via the folding rear bench. It features an unladen ground clearance of approximately 200 mm and a minimum turning radius of ≤ 5.5 m.
The exterior styling of the JS2 was penned by the JAC Turin Design Centre in Italy under a "youthful and stylish" design ethos. Up front, it features JAC's signature "bottle-mouth" chrome front grille flanked by LED daytime running lights (DRLs), giving the front fascia a distinctive identity. Sharp creases around the fog lamp housings add a sporty edge. The rear styling remains clean and understated, featuring a body-coloured bumper integrated with four reverse parking sensor probes.
Roof rails and a shark fin antenna come fitted as standard, with white exterior paint options offering an optional contrasting black roof and two-tone wing mirrors. Down the flanks, a sharp shoulder line lends the crossover a compact, athletic stance. Inside, the cabin adopts a predominantly black colour scheme, accented with silver chrome garnishes across the dashboard and door panels. Leatherette upholstery is fitted as standard across the range, with higher variants gaining a multi-function leather-wrapped steering wheel. Models from 2016 onwards wear JAC's updated emblem, elevating the cabin's overall perceived quality.
Under the bonnet, the JS2 offers a choice of two naturally aspirated petrol engines: a 1.5-litre and a 1.6-litre. The 1.5-litre unit (code: HFC4GB2.3D) develops a maximum power of 83 kW (approx. 113 PS) and 146 Nm of torque, peaking between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm. The 1.6-litre powerplant (code: HFC4GB3.3D) produces 88 kW (approx. 120 PS) and 150 Nm, featuring Dual Variable Valve Timing (DVVT) to optimise power delivery while keeping fuel consumption low. Both engines feature all-aluminium cylinder blocks and cylinder heads with multi-point fuel injection, engineered to run on RON 92 petrol.
Transmission options comprise a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic, with power sent exclusively to the front wheels (FWD) across the lineup. The CVT is the VT2i unit sourced from Belgium's Punch Powertrain platform. Top speed is rated at 170 km/h, with the 1.5L CVT variant accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.8 seconds. Combined NEDC fuel consumption ranges between 6.5 and 6.9 L/100 km, while the 2026 Egyptian-spec model claims a combined figure of 6.5 L/100 km. In select overseas markets, an LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) bi-fuel version is also available, delivering approximately 6 PS less than the petrol variant.
In terms of underpinnings, the JS2 employs a front MacPherson strut independent suspension paired with a rear torsion beam non-independent setup, a segment-standard layout that balances manufacturing cost with daily ride comfort. The steering is an Electric Power Steering (EPS) rack-and-pinion system supporting tilt adjustment. Stopping power is handled by ventilated front discs and solid rear discs, paired with a mechanical handbrake. It rides on 205/55 R16 tyres with alloy wheels fitted as standard across the range, complemented by either a full-size or steel spare wheel depending on the spec.
Kerb weight ranges from 1,155 kg to 1,175 kg for the 1.5L manual and around 1,220 kg for the 1.6L CVT. The JS2 offers an approach angle of ≥ 17°, a departure angle of ≥ 21°, and a fully laden ground clearance of ≥ 120 mm, ensuring adequate clearance for urban roads and mild undulations. The complete vehicle comes backed by a 3-year or 100,000 km manufacturer warranty.
Inside, the JS2 strikes a practical balance between everyday utility and modern technology. The dashboard is fitted with an 8.0-inch floating touchscreen display as standard, while high-spec export variants are upgraded to a 9.0-inch MP5 unit supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The infotainment system integrates Bluetooth telephony, MP3/USB audio playback, and satellite navigation, paired with a 4-speaker audio system (with higher speaker counts available on premium trims). A voice command system allows convenient operation of navigation, audio, and telephony on the move.
For interior comfort, higher variants are equipped with leather seats, a 6-way manually adjustable driver's seat, and a foldable rear bench. Standard conveniences across the range include manual air conditioning, power windows for all four doors, electrically adjustable wing mirrors, and a 12V front power socket. High-spec models further add cruise control and selectable Sport and Snow drive modes. LED daytime running lights, automatic headlamps, front and rear fog lamps, and follow-me-home headlamp delay functionality provide added practicality and driving safety.
Safety is a key selling proposition for the JS2 (Refine S2). The vehicle is constructed around a high-strength safety cage (termed RSIE body structure by JAC), capable of withstanding impact forces of up to 980 MPa (equivalent to 98 kg of impact force per square millimetre), reinforced with high-strength impact beams along the front, rear, and door sills. Active safety kit includes standard ABS with EBD, with higher-tier trims adding Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), and Brake Override System (BOS). Premium models also feature a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and six airbags (dual front, front side, and curtain airbags). TPMS is standard across the board.
In terms of driver assistance, the JS2 comes equipped with cruise control, a reverse camera, and front and rear parking sensors (with 4 rear sensor probes). Top-tier variants add Lane Departure Warning and Blind Spot Monitoring. Although the JS2 itself was not put through C-NCAP crash testing, its platform sibling, the Refine S3, scored 55.4 points to secure a full 5-star C-NCAP safety rating, reflecting JAC's structural engineering competence in the compact SUV segment.
The Refine S2 enjoyed a notable sales run in China upon its debut. In 2015 (its launch year), cumulative deliveries reached 26,718 units, before climbing to a lifecycle peak of 48,884 units in 2016. The Refine S2 also took home the "Popular Car of the Year" award in 2015. Volume softened to 22,730 units in 2017 and steadily declined thereafter—posting 13,606 units in 2018, 9,833 units in 2019, 5,168 units in 2020, and 2,369 units in 2021. From 2017 onwards, stiffening rivalry in the small crossover space and a slower model refresh cadence contributed to declining sales, ultimately leading to its discontinuation in the domestic Chinese market.
Nonetheless, the JS2 has maintained steady traction abroad. In 2025, JAC confirmed plans to introduce the JS2 Pro crossover to the Russian market. In April 2025, the JS2 PRO officially debuted in Chile. By November 2026, Egypt's Kasrawy Group is slated to commence local production of the 2026 JS2 CKD model. The crossover has also expanded into markets including the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Libya. From a broader perspective, the JS2 (Refine S2) served as a vital strategic model for JAC Motors in the compact crossover arena; its proposition of "Italian design, competitive pricing, and dependable utility" provided JAC with invaluable engineering and export marketing experience, laying the groundwork for successor offerings like the JS2 PRO.
